iPhone 4S

So, the new iPhone was released, and now we know alllll the details. Really not many surprises though.

It’s going to look just like the previous iPhone 4, but with a dual core processor (about twice as fast) and a newer antenna that’s supposed to help with signal. The only real big news is that it will now be available on Sprint, and has a cool new voice control feature called Siri.

So, some of our previous predictions came true, some not even close! What’s our review? Well, we haven’t gotten to play with it yet but if you’ve got to get a new phone now you could make much worse choices. If you don’t mind waiting, or you’re still in contract, it makes more sense to hold our until something newer comes out.

New iPhone

Hello All!

So, we here at the Tech Team love to speculate, and what’s better to speculate about than the new iPhone?

Will it be bigger? Faster? Lighter? What will it even be called?!

Could the iPhone 5 look like this? Probably not!

We’ve heard all sorts of rumors about this one, but it’s hard to say for sure what it’s all going to have in store. Apple has kept it’s lips sealed very tight, like usual. Luckily, they’ve got an upcoming anouncement (October 4th) that should reveal all. In the meantime, here’s what we know, or are at least pretty sure it should have.

  • Faster: This one is obvious. You can’t create a new iphone that’s slower than the previous. Many reports speculate it will use an A5 processor, something the iPad 2 already uses.
  • Lighter, thinner: This was is expected as well, but isn’t for sure. This could largely depend whether the shape is the same as the iPhone 4, or a completely new design.
  • Name: Nobody knows this yet, but we believe the rumors that there will be something called the iPhone 4S, and possibly something called the iPhone 5. (sort of a low end and high end model)
  • Voice control: It’s practically a given that Apple will have more voice controls in the new iphone, as they’ve release beta and early previews of the new software. That new software has built in voice controls

What else will there be? Nobody knows, but at least October 4th isn’t that far away!

Remote Cleaning!

We here at Tech Team are happy to announce something a little new, different, and amazing! We can now use a remote tool to help fix certain problems over the internet. What that means for you is no unhooking the computer, or even leaving the house. Just sit back and watch us work.

We’re also currently offering a special on our remote cleanup to get the word out, so for now it’s $10 off the regular price!

You may be wondering, well what can you all do remotely and what can’t be done? The remote cleaning is great for fixing settings, removing or adding programs, or even getting rid of certain infections.

Unfortunately, what we can’t do is replace computer parts (we wish!) or diagnose some pesky computer problems like random computer crashes or start up errors. Of course, it also requires a high speed connection for the tool to work.

If you’re interested, or are wondering more specifically how we can help you out, feel free to call our Tech Team at 320-256-9944.

Hot Hot Heat!

We’ve been crazy busy at Redneck Tech headquarters, so it’s been a while since posting. But, we just had to get the word out about this heat. It’s been so hot the past couple of days it’s the perfect time to remind people what to watch out for and how to prevent your computer from overheating!

Any piece of electronic equipment can overheat, whether it be a computer, modem, router…or even a radio! We just happen to see computers and other similar devices have this problem more often for a few reasons. First of all, computers are relatively large, complex devices and rely on fans to keep them cool. Simpler things, like a radio, can stay cool just by being built from certain materials and having vents on them. That would not fly on a computer!

So, we install vents with fans and big heatsinks to try and draw the heat away. But that’s not always enough. Eventually the inside of a computer will get dusty preventing the fans from doing their job. So, how do you know if your computer is overheating?

  • If your computer is randomly shutting off, it may be overheating
  • If you can see dust bunnies all over the fans of your computer, it may be overheating
  • If to the touch it feels much hotter than it typically does, it may be overheating
  • If the fans sometimes spin much louder for extended periods of time, it’s trying to cool your machine down, so it may be overheating
  • If you smell a burning smell coming from the inside…It’s probably overheating!

It’s best to try and get any overheating problems fixed BEFORE it starts randomly shutting off, so if you’re starting to see a lot of dust build up it’s time for a cleanup! Bring it on into the Redneck Techs here, we’d be happy help.

BIG Windows 8 reveals

It’s been a huge couple of weeks for technology news. Apple’s announced 3 or 4 new products, the E3 conference has shown TONS of new games and video game machines, and Microsoft showed a live demo of Windows 8.

We’ll try to cover many of these topics, but for today we’d like to show a bit of what Microsoft’s got in their corner. The big news is that the new Windows start screen will be radically different. Instead of the traditional desktop, we’ll see something a bit more like Windows Phone.

Windows 8 Start Screen

That doesn’t mean the old desktop won’t be there, it’ll just not be the default. The idea is that the interface will be much more intuitive, simple, and easy to learn. Some people are arguing it’s too basic though, and is a step backwards instead of forward.

What do you think? Will you be lining up for this new version of Windows in 2012? Or are you going to stick with Windows 7 for the time being? We’ll be covering more features as they’re released…

Mac Virus – Update

Last week we wrote about an infection that’s been spreading like wild fire on Macintosh computers. Well, Apple has been fairly quick to respond with an update coming out this week that not only removes that infection but also blocks it from installing in the future. (The update requires OS X Snow Leapord, and can be found in the Software Update section of Mac OS)

This is actually pretty surprising because software makers typically leave it up to owners to handle security and management of viruses on their machine. Only in extreme cases has Microsoft come out with similar updates for Windows, or Apple for Macintosh.

On the other hand, this might not be too much of a surprise because Macintoshes are well known for supposedly being infection free, and Apple may be trying to maintain that public view. This is a good reminder though that there’s no such thing as a virus free computer, and if you think you might have a virus it’s better to have it looked at sooner than later!

Mac Virus?!

It’s been an interesting week for Apple. The company that is well known for making computers where you don’t have to worry about infections, has a pretty big virus going around.

That’s right, a Macintosh virus. Now, Mac viruses have always been around but have never really been widespread because it’s much more difficult to infect a Macintosh and because so few infections are made for them. But this past week a new Fake AV, called Mac Defender, has been spreading like crazy!

A picture of the infection, Mac Defender

So, if you own a Macintosh computer please be warry of any popups claiming to be a security program. You should know if your computer has an Anti-virus, and trust only that. If you think you’ve already been infected, it’s best to get it cleaned up by a professional quickly before the infection continues to spread.

Usually, we’d recommend contacting Apple for things like this but Apple can not directly help customers clean their computers. Luckily, we’ve already seen and removed this infection numerous times so feel free to bring to the Redneck Techs or call with questions!

More on Windows 8

A while back, we wrote an article making some guesses and suggestions about Windows 8. Well, some screenshots and information is finally being leaked out and so far it’s looking pretty good!

Remember, none of this is fully confirmed yet but we’ve found these sources to be very reliable when it comes to Microsoft.

The first, and coolest, new feature we’ve seen is a new login screen for windows. The picture below is just one example but we really like that it shows important information like the time and ate before you even login. It’s much more like a cell phone lock screen in this way, and we’ve even heard a rumor that instead of a password Windows 8 will let you have a gesture or puzzle that needs solving to get in!

As predicted, it also seems like Windows 8 will have an app store of sorts (similar to what Apple has) making it much simpler to buy, install, and use computer programs. There’s no screenshots of this one yet, but there are a few mock ups of what it might look like. Here’s one…

Lastly, Windows 8 will apparently have a built in pdf reader. That’ll make opening pdf documents much easier, and also making it unnecessary to download Adobe Reader (unless you want to of course) Thanks to Paul Thurrott for finding this one.

All in all, there’s plenty of new features coming from Microsoft and we’re hearing it could be ready to be released as soon as 2012. This is just the tip of the iceberg so watch out for all the new info we find out!
